8th October 2008 - 11:01amGOOD & BAD NEWS
LONDON (Reuters) - Recruiters reported the weakest job market for permanent employees since October 2001 in September and highlighted the extent to which a slowing economy was keeping wage inflation subdued.
The KPMG/REC Report on Jobs said on Wednesday that permanent staff salaries were unchanged in September for the first time in over five years of growth -- something that may ease the Bank of England's inflation worries as it contemplates whether to cut interest rates on Thursday.
The permanent placements index fell to 41.2 from August's 41.5, the fastest slowdown since October 2001, while billings for temporary workers fell to 45.3 from 46.4, the fastest contraction since the survey began 11-years ago.
"The rapidly worsening economic outlook is now really starting to bite in the jobs market with temporary and permanent appointments dropping rapidly," said Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), which represents 8,000 recruitment agencies.
The government should scrap plans to abolish a value-added tax exemption for recruitment services, which saves employers 400 million pounds a year, Green added..

The statement above is taken from Reuters. There is no doubt that the job market is becoming increasingly difficult in the midst of these turbulent times. There is, however, a ray of light for us. We have many contacts in the Finance, Banking, Administrative, Blue and White Collar recruitment sectors and they have seen a very sharp and painful slowing down.
The benefit that we have felt is that we work in the I.T. sales sector. The I.T. industry is a sales based and dynamic, proactive arena. Companies in it rely on sales people to inspire and compel customers that their solution will give them a ROI. Companies have a choice. They either go with the economic flow (NOT A PARTICULARLY DESIRABLE OPTION!) or they attack the market and sell more. There are still deals to be won, the question is, which supplier will win them? Those that do will still thrive, those that don’t may be in for a rougher ride.
The big drive at the moment is for dynamic new business focused sales people, people who can make a real difference. People who have demonstrable performance against target in a competitive arena. It is now more important than ever that you are capable of articulating and proving your successes. League tables, P60s, References, are massive sales tools for you. They will help to differentiate you from the other candidates and help you to secure a positive career move.
25th September 2008 - 12:24pmExciting Month for HJ
This has been an exciting month internally at Howard Jackson. Each of our offices have introduced new members into their established IT sales recruitment teams. Emily Heptonstall and Rebecca Pegram-Bond join us from sales driven careers in the commercial sector. Peter Awcock brings us a wealth of recruitment experience and a real passion for high quality service delivery. We have also continued our commitment to recruit and train the brightest young talent with the appointment of John Ashton who will be going through our industry recognised training program.
Hopefully they will be able to emulate Colin Roberts who joined the Manchester team 6 weeks ago. He has already recorded his first placement with a niche software vendor who retained our services on an exclusive basis. We are sure this will be the first of many satisfied technology organisations !!
These staff will be working alongside dynamic IT sales recruitment gurus and on that note Alex Belford, who heads up our Northern Office celebrated 5 years service with Howard Jackson. He is renowned for his absolute commitment to excellence in every aspect of the recruitment cycle. Well done and congratulations, Alex.
